You can read more about the history of the airport on Wikipedia. I had the chance to swing by and take a guided tour through the now deserted airport on my Christmas break and in the process I snapped some great pictures.

This post has been moved from www.ifnt.us to my personal site www.fearghal.co.uk.

Dropbox has saved my life more times than I care to remember. It really is one of this innovative pieces of software that has been Conceptualised, Designed and Built extremely well. Those of you who know and love Dropbox will agree with me and know how useful it can be. For those of you who don’t, here is a quick rundown of its features.

What exactly is Dropbox?

It’s easiest to think it as a thumb drive in the cloud, its simple to set up and after that there is no thought required.

It is a piece of software that installs a different kind of folder on your computer. Anything that you put in this folder will automatically sync up to Dropbox’s servers, you don’t even have to tell it to do so. You can get access to these files from any web browser anywhere in the world.

Dropbox stays in sync across all of your computers (or smartphones for that matter). So if you have Dropbox installed on more than one computer say, one at work, and one at home. You can save some files in the Dropbox folder at home, then get them in the office. No thumb drives, no email, no external HD’s. It’s all just there.

Feature Rundown

Share Folders: Dropbox allows you to share folders with any other Dropbox user, meaning you can have a folder with your staff who work from home, when they make changes to their files; you get them right there on your computer.

I know people who have put entire websites into Dropbox to get the code checked by friends. Lecturers have shared a folders with their classmates as a resource repository. This really is another one of those killer features.

Restore Files: Also, if you accidentally delete a file. Dropbox just removes it from your folder, but it’s not gone for ever. You can go online and get it back in just a few clicks, with their “Show deleted files” feature. You heard it right, that’s free backup. No charge.

Access Anywhere: On top of all of this, Dropbox have applications for pretty much all major mobile operating systems. This is really great for getting access to your flight details that are on your computer at home, or emailing that file to your boss from the train. Heck, it even saved my skin once when a presentation wouldn’t open. I just went online and downloaded the file and give a great little presentation at that landed the deal. Dropbox to the rescue.

All good so far? Whats the downside?

Space is a premium as they say. As a free user, you get 2 gb of space. That a lot for a writer, charity worker, or say, an accountant, who generally work with small files. But what about a designer? Someone who works with a lot of big graphic files or photographs? Well you can upgrade with the few options below.

Upgrade for free: you can get an extra <del>8 gb</del> 16GB of storage space by referring friends. Each friend that you refer gets you (and your friend) an extra <del>250</del> 500MB. Not too bad. Thats a total of <del>10</del> 18GB of storage. You need to use a referral link to join and get the extra space, if you click on any of the links in this article, you’ll get mine.

Paid upgrade: Offered in 50 & 100 gb increments costing US$99 per year or US$ 199 per year respectively, these should cover the main brunt of your storage requirements. They also offer a price for Teams that is costly to say the least, but has a host of other features and is well worth it.

Non Profit Pricing?? <del>I have dropped the guys over at Dropbox an email and am patiently waiting for their response. I’ll update this post once I get word back.</del> They have responded, see the Update below.

So, as your starting out on your charity adventure, Dropbox really is a great piece of software that won’t cost you anything and really will save your skin in times of need. Theres really no reason not to be using it.

Update: The guys over at dropbox got back to me with the great news below.

Dropbox does now offer non-profit pricing on their Dropbox for Teamsproduct. Teams can receive a 30% discount by providing any government accredited certificate that validates non-profit status. Please contact Dropbox directly if interested in pursuing Dropbox for Teams for your NPO.
